Making memories: are we doing the best we can, and are we preserving and sharing the memories we make?

[The wasted spending] was just 4 days since canceling our session, already totaling over $200 for un necessary things.  My nails only lasted about 2 weeks, my hair is gone, and seven weeks passed when I got the phone call from our doctor.  It was not something I expected and the cancer has spread very quickly.  I will be leaving my husband, my 6 year old girl and my now 2 year old – not by choice.

Having grown up in a traditional extended family that included many servants of mankind (teachers, doctors, district attorney, preachers and more) and yet lived through the 60′s at the University of Texas and endured the indignation cast upon me and my fellow Viet Nam veterans, I think I know something about Givers versus Takers.  Continue reading

Listening this morning to Bill Bennett’s “Morning in America” radio talk show I heard a great discussion about the proper role for government. As is typical with this type of discussion, the analysis was in terms of which problems is government best suited to solve. Continue reading

The topic de rigueur is the blasting of China in every imaginable way:  theft of trade secrets, the imminent owning of America, trade imbalance, stealing of our manufacturing base, and more. The current political “debates”1 apparently require a load of diatribes against the Chinese. Coffee shop talk echoes with it. Continue reading

Who is ready to hire him?

(The original author doesn’t) personally know the man in the photo, but it’s not difficult to figure out a few things about him. One, like many in the occupational protest army, he probably considers himself a non-conformist. Hence, all that expensive ink on his arms. Question: Did any of his student loan money pay for any of that ink? If so, his government loan shark might like to have words with him.

An era is over. Space Shuttle Atlantis (STS-135) has launched. I have lived through the conception, inception, and now possibly the demolition of one of America’s finest “moments.” Expensive? Heck yeah. But we have taken for granted the basic fact of the space shuttle program along with the entirety of the space program, and thus have under-appreciated what it has contributed and meant to this country.

The measure of a man

Every father should want his son to grow to be a man. They grow older, but do they grow into men? Some do and some don’t. What is a “man?” I suggest that a “man” is far more than simply a male of our species. Each culture has its own rites of passage for passing a boy into manhood. Continue reading

This was too good not to preserve and, besides, I lived in this era and can relate.

In the line at the store, the cashier told the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bag because plastic bags weren’t good for the environment. The woman apologized to him and explained, “We didn’t have the ‘green thing‘ back in my day.”

The clerk responded, “That’s our problem today. The former generation did not care enough to save our environment.”

He was right, that generation didn’t have the green thing in its day. Continue reading
